Jamie Carragher sets two challenges for David Moyes at Everton ahead of Merseyside derby

David Moyes is set to visit Anfield for the second time since he was re-appointed Everton manager at the start of the calendar year.

While the Scotsman has taken part in many exciting Merseyside derbies over the years — including one where an ebullient Luis Suarez dove in front of him, and another recent 2-2 win in the final derby at Goodison Park — he's still waiting for his first win at Anfield.

Longtime Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, an Everton fan as a child, penned an op-ed in The Telegraph decrying that Moyes must do two things to be considered Everton's greatest manager.

In addition to winning silverware with the club, which is without any since the 1995 FA Cup — Moyes didn't capture a major trophy with them during his stint there from 2002-2013; he did help West Ham win the 2023 Conference League title, though — the Scot must win at Anfield, Carragher claims, as he's yet to beat Liverpool at home after 22 tries.

"Until those objectives are met, there will be painful omissions on an impressive Everton CV keeping him in [Howard] Kendall and [Harry] Catterick’s shadow," the Liverpool legend wrote.

Moyes' record at Anfield, which includes trips with Manchester United, Sunderland, and West Ham, is seven draws and 15 defeats.

Moyes' last trip with the Toffees was in April last year, when a goal from the late Diogo Jota was enough to hand the Reds a 1-0 victory.

His most recent trip managing a different side came in 2023/24 when his West Ham side was battered 5-1 in a fall League Cup fixture. This came just two months after the Hammers lost 3-1 at Anfield in the league.

Moyes, an 11-time Premier League Manager of the Month winner, has the Toffees off to a strong start to the 2025/26 campaign, having won twice and drawn in four contests.

However, Arne Slot's Liverpool side has won four in four (each in last-minute fashion).

"Liverpool have shown at different times where they have been very good, but other times when they have shown some vulnerability when they have conceded goals," Moyes said of his upcoming opponents.

"We will have to try and take advantage of those moments. We played them last year at Anfield and lost to an offside goal, and we want to try and run them close again, and maybe this time things will go in our favor."

Perhaps summer loanee Jack Grealish can be the difference for Moyes.

The former Aston Villa and Manchester City star raced to a strong start this season and was awarded the Premier League's August Player of the Month honor.
