Jamie Carragher shares Marc Guehi theory amid Liverpool transfer doubt - 'Not 100 percent'

Jamie Carragher has cast doubt on Liverpool going back in for Marc Guehi, with the former defender suggesting the Crystal Palace star isn’t the fix the Reds need now.

Guehi continues to be strongly linked with a move to Anfield, having been denied a transfer to Merseyside on deadline day during the summer. The England international had undergone a medical ahead of completing a switch, only for Palace to pull the plug at the eleventh hour.

A move to Liverpool could still be on the cards though, even if it might not come in January, with Oliver Glasner having suggested that Guehi will remain at Palace until the end of the season.

The 25-year-old’s contract expires then, and there is no sign of him choosing to sign a new deal, meaning he should be available for free in the summer. Carragher though is not so sure Liverpool will revisit its interest.

Giving his thoughts in an interview with Rory Jennings, the Reds legend said: “I’ve got a bit of a theory about Marc Guehi that I’m not 100 percent sure the club would or should go straight back in for him.

“When Marc Guehi was available in the summer, they weren’t buying him to go straight into the team, they were buying him as competition for [Ibrahima] Konate.

“I think now they would be buying one to replace Konate instead, and Guehi can do that, but Liverpool have had a lot of problems from set pieces this season.

“One thing you can say about Konate is that he is a big lump, six foot three, so taking someone out like that for someone who is just under six foot, doesn’t make sense.

“I think if they sign Guehi, it will be a replacement for Joe Gomez, someone who can cover across the whole back four.

“And if they sign a replacement for Konate if he doesn’t sign, they are buying someone who’s six foot three, six foot four.

“Liverpool need to get more equipped to this Premier League with long throws and corners, they are basically the worst team for it, so taking one of the biggest headers out the team for Guehi, I don’t think that fixes that.”

Liverpool’s problems in defense have been well documented this season, and Arne Slot hasn’t been helped by the growing injury problems his side is facing.

Having lost Giovanni Leoni early on in the season, the Reds boss is now without Gomez, as well as Wataru Endo who could have provided some cover.

That leaves just Konate and Virgil van Dijk as the only fit senior center-backs at the moment, although Slot has played down the prospect of the club dipping back into the transfer market.

"This is our way of working at Liverpool. The outside world wants to believe we have unlimited money but that is not true,” he said last week.

"You insiders know – and you are the only ones because the outside world only talks about our spending – what we have brought in (money) to spend.

"That is the way we work over here. You then have to accept that in certain games during a season you are short of a right full back. But we are still able to win. I fully believe in that way of working, by the way."
