Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher didn't hesitate to twist the knife following Manchester United's Carabao Cup elimination - resharing a recent video where Gary Neville claimed his former club would "surprise a few."
Neville had made those optimistic remarks after the opening Premier League weekend, but barely more than a week later, the Red Devils crashed out of the Carabao Cup against Grimsby. The League Two (fourth tier) side progressed to round three via a penalty shootout after establishing a 2-0 half-time advantage.
United managed to avoid complete humiliation by equalizing in regular time, but crumbled in the spot-kick lottery, as the Mariners secured a memorable triumph, while those from Manchester endured an utterly crushing blow.
Neville has delivered his traditional seasonal forecasts and placed the Red Devils in the top four, despite their 15th-place finish last campaign.
He insisted that their display in defeat to Arsenal had convinced him they were genuinely moving in the right direction.
Subsequently, they've drawn with Fulham and now suffered a second-round Carabao Cup defeat to a League Two opponent, prompting Carragher to mock his Sky Sports counterpart.
He shared a clip on social media where Neville defended his top four prediction, saying: "When I watched United yesterday, I thought the performance was very good. I think they'll get a goalkeeper, I'm banking on it.
"When they bring a goalkeeper in and you've got those players up front with that backline, I think with the free weeks they've got and no Europa League, I think United will surprise a few."
Neville highlighted how he's backed United for the top four in every prediction he's made on Sky Sports.
Despite the club's disappointing campaign last season, he's placed United ahead of Chelsea, Newcastle, and Aston Villa.
However, United has failed to match the standards it displayed during its opening weekend defeat at Old Trafford, with Ruben Amorim acknowledging that the encouraging signs from the team's Arsenal loss haven't carried forward, as it endured a deeply troubling result against Grimsby.
The head coach said: "When everything is so important in our club, and you try to do everything.
"You have come from pre-season, even Arsenal you lose the game, but you are there, you are improving, and you see the performance, but then reach this kind of game, when everything is so important in our club.
"And when you start a game like this... I think my players are talking really loud about what they want, so I'm really sorry to our fans, I have nothing to say anymore."
