Jamie Carragher admits he would still like to see Liverpool add another defender before Monday's transfer deadline after an agreement was reached with Rennes to sign Jeremy Jacquet for next season.

Jacquet is on Merseyside to undergo a medical on Monday after the Reds fended off competition from Chelsea over the weekend, and the agreement is worth an initial £55 million ($75 million) with a further £5 million ($7 million) in add-ons.

However, the 20-year-old will remain with the Ligue 1 outfit for the remainder of the season to assist with their pursuit of a European spot, and while Reds icon Carragher is delighted to see his former club bolster the heart of their defence for the long term, the 2005 Champions League winner believes Arne Slot also requires reinforcements for this campaign.

"Yes I am pleased they have made a signing in that area," Carragher told Sky Sports News.

"Liverpool need reinforcements in that area, but they definitely need that in the summer.

"It looks like Ibrahima Konate is going to move on, as he hasn't signed a contract yet, so I think they are getting young center-backs for the future.

"Unfortunately, (Giovanni) Leoni, who they signed last summer, has suffered an ACL injury, so we don't see him as well.

"So I would still like to see Liverpool sign another defender today because I think they will need one before the end of the season."

Carragher, who turned out 737 times for the Reds, continued: "Yes (there's some frustration the deal isn't for now).

"But when they are talking with Rennes, it's part of the deal and the reason Liverpool have got the deal over the line is because they have said to Rennes they can keep the player until the end of the season.

"They aren't going to want to disrupt their season in France between now and the end of the season.

"So yeah, I can understand (the frustration), but he is their player, so you have to sort of play by their rules.

"Liverpool have paid top money for a player of that age, so the future bodes well at center-back, but they have pressing problems right now that they need to fix."

Liverpool is presently missing Leoni, who sustained an ACL injury against Southampton in September, right-back Conor Bradley, who picked up a severe knee injury against Arsenal last month and the adaptable Joe Gomez, who is rehabilitating from a hip injury.
