It had been suggested that Jarrod Bowen would be a good signing for Liverpool amid West Ham's relegation battle, but the chances of the Reds swooping for him are virtually non-existent

A former Liverpool defender has rejected a suggestion that the Reds should look to sign Jarrod Bowen from West Ham.

Bowen is West Ham's best player and has hit double figures for goals in each of the last four seasons for the Hammers, but the prospect of him leaving the London Stadium has been mooted amid the team's struggles this season.

The 29-year-old is contracted to West Ham until 2030, but former Premier League goalkeeper Ben Foster suggested this week that he could be attainable amid the team's battle against relegation.

"He could play for Liverpool quite happily, and he would suit Liverpool down to the ground," Foster said on an episode of the wittily named Fozcast podcast. "You'd get three or four years out of him at the same level and intensity."

Liverpool rarely signs players who are in their late 20s or older, and ex-Reds center-back Stephane Henchoz does not think a move for Bowen would make much sense – instead suggesting that the club should focus its attention on strengthening the defense.

"I would definitely agree with Liverpool fans that what they need the most is a centre-back," Henchoz said. "They need a very good center-back, somebody who is able to come, play, perform straight away.

"So they need to spend, and maybe they have to spend big, because to get this type of player, unless it's somebody who comes on loan, only for six months period or something, you will have to spend big again.

"Do they need another offensive player or striker? I don't think so because I still believe that Mohamed Salah will be back after the Africa Cup of Nations. I still believe he'll be motivated even after what happened before Christmas. And I still believe he's got it.

"I'm still confident when he will be back after maybe four or six weeks away, in his head, he will be refreshed and he will start scoring goals and bringing assists again.

"Jarrod Bowen is a good player, definitely. Is he then the player Liverpool would be looking for? Maybe not, because if you invest money, you would maybe go for a younger player, somebody who you would spend money thinking I can resell him maybe later.

"Bowen is a bit older. And once again, he's been very good at West Ham. Is he really able to do the same job again at a bigger club, on a bigger stage? Maybe, but I'm not sure.

"So then it's always a club's decision to decide which profile they will go for. And I'm not sure Bowen will be this profile."

Speaking ahead of a League Cup clash between Liverpool and West Ham in December 2023, Jurgen Klopp described Bowen as "probably my favorite player".
