Despite improving in recent months, Florian Wirtz has generally had a tough first season at Liverpool, but Jeremie Frimpong expects him to cause serious problems for defenders when he hits top form

Jeremie Frimpong has warned Premier League defenders that there are some embarrassing moments ahead for them when Florian Wirtz fully hits his stride at Liverpool.

Frimpong and Wirtz both joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen last summer, but both men have had tough first seasons at Anfield.

Frimpong's season has been plagued with fitness issues, while Wirtz has struggled to live up to his price tag – despite showing improved performances in recent months. Wirtz is yet to show the form he displayed while playing for Leverkusen, but Frimpong fully expects him to eventually do so – and when he does, it will spell trouble for top-flight defenders.

“At Leverkusen, everyone played a part of winning," Frimpong said. "But if Flo wasn’t there, then maybe it would have been a different story.

"You know, he was the heartbeat of the team. You guys are seeing it now. You guys are seeing more of it, more of it now.

“But he’s got so much more.

"Flo at his best, he wins you games. Flo at his best, it’s going to score goals and assist. Flo at his best, he’s going to embarrass you if you’re a defender.

“He’s like a wizard. He’s so confident of his abilities. He can just go past anyone. He’s so clinical, playmaker.”

Speaking last week, Wirtz acknowledged that he has not delivered to the level that was expected of him when he first joined the club for what was, at the time, a potential Premier League record transfer fee.

"I know that they paid a lot for me. I still think that I'm improving, it was a difficult start for me because I wanted to impact the team immediately.

"I have to accept it, I'm feeling very good now on a physical level.

"I'm feeling good in England now because this was a big change for me, now I'm trying to make the team better."

Liverpool's fans had to wait until December for Wirtz to register his first Premier League goal and assist, and although his form started to improve around that period of the season, he is still a way off his best level – at club level, anyway.

Wirtz produced an incredible performance during the recent international break, scoring twice and assisting twice in one game as Germany registered a 4-3 victory over Switzerland.
