Liverpool agreed a fee worth up to $83 million (£60 million) including add-ons to sign Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes ahead of the summer, but almost as soon as that deal was done, he sustained a serious injury.

Jacquet, 20, has been a key man for Rennes this season. The French team was insistent that he wouldn't be leaving until the end of the campaign, regardless of where he went, with Chelsea and Bayern Munich also keen.

But 69 minutes into a defeat against Lens, just a few days after his Liverpool transfer was confirmed, Jacquet injured his shoulder with a problem that caused him a significant amount of pain.

According to local reporter Francois Rauzy, there is "no guarantee" that Jacquet will play again for Rennes, considering that he will move to Liverpool in the summer. There are fears that he could miss the rest of the season.

There are 12 games remaining for the French side in Ligue 1. It has already been knocked out of the French cup and did not qualify for European soccer this term.

"For Jeremy, it's his shoulder, and for Abdelhamid (Ait Boudlal, the other Rennes player injured), it's muscular," then-Rennes head coach Habib Beye said immediately after the injury occurred.

"We'll have time to see, but it's definitely quite serious for both of them."

Beye has since been fired. In its first match without him at the helm, Rennes beat PSG by three goals to one, with Mousa Tamari, Esteban Lepaul and Breel Embolo on the scoresheet.

"Very pleasing, of course," Slot said after the deal for Jacquet was confirmed. "He's a very big talent and maybe even more than talent but we speak about talent because of his age.

"Second, because we weren't the only one interested in him so it's a big compliment to the people working really hard to sign players.

"Such a big talent and another example of the model we're using at this club — young, very talented players sometimes at the start of their careers or sometimes already a little bit a few years into their career but always players that are young and can improve us in the short term but also definitely in the long term.

"We've signed a lot of them recently and like I've said many times in the mid-long term future of this club, and even the short term, is in a very good place."

Liverpool.com says: Jacquet looks to be a real talent. If Liverpool can keep Ibrahima Konate and have Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni backing up the Frenchman and Virgil van Dijk next season, that would be a very strong quartet.
