Jeremy Jacquet became Liverpool's first summer 2026 acquisition earlier this week... on deadline day of the January transfer window.

The Reds have taken steps to address their impending issues in the center of defense by striking an agreement to sign one of European soccer's most highly rated center-backs. Ibrahima Konate is out of contract at the end of the season and could leave for free in the summer, while Virgil van Dijk's and Joe Gomez's deals are due to expire in 2027.

Liverpool missed out on signing Marc Guehi, who joined Manchester City during the January window, so it was imperative that the Reds took steps to address the uncertainty around the future of Slot's defense.

Jacquet's deal is subject to a work permit and international clearance.

He completed his medical on Merseyside on Monday.

A fee of £55 million ($75 million), plus an additional £5 million ($7 million), has been agreed with Rennes for the center-back’s transfer, with the deal deferred until the start of the 2026/27 campaign.

Jacquet has agreed a contract that will run until 2031, and his arrival is in keeping with Liverpool’s transfer policy of targeting young defenders, who can be mainstays in the team for years to come.

But how does he compare to the current center-back duo that Arne Slot currently favors?

We've taken a look at how his stats stack up against Van Dijk and Konate this season...

We used Opta data to look at a host of different metrics, comparing Van Dijk's and Konate's performances in the Premier League this season with Jacquet's Ligue 1 performances for Rennes.

All stats listed are per 90 minutes played.

The stats show that Van Dijk remains an elite performer – as we all know – topping most metrics that we looked at.

The legendary Liverpool captain has committed the fewest fouls, completed the most passes, made the most clearances, and received the fewest yellow cards, while he also comes out on top for percentage of aerial duels won and percentage of ground duels won.

Jacquet comes out on top in a few metrics, too, boasting the highest passing accuracy, while completing the most interceptions, blocking the most shots, and completing the most ball recoveries. Konate doesn't top any metric that we looked at.
