John Terry weighs in on Chelsea managerial debate and outlines his stance on taking job

Sections of Chelsea's fanbase have made it clear that they would like to see John Terry return to the club as part of the new managerial setup following the sacking of Enzo Maresca

John Terry has claimed Chelsea need a "top manager" to return to their former glories following the sacking of Enzo Maresca.

The Stamford Bridge icon responded to one fan on Instagram, who appeared to claim the former Chelsea and England captain did not have the relevant coaching qualifications to be considered for the vacant role - despite many fans pushing Terry's name forward.

Terry said: "I have every qualification going, I have three years coaching experience in the Premier League with Aston Villa.

"On top of that nobody is more Chelsea than me, for us to be top again we need a top manager as yes that would rule me out but please don't say I'm under qualified!"

Liam Rosenior is now in London to hold talks with the Blues hierarchy. The former Hull City boss led Strasbourg for their 1-1 draw at Nice on Saturday before heading to England.

He was accompanied by Strasbourg president Marc Keller and David Weir.

Chelsea interim boss Calum McFarlane is expected to take a recovery session at Cobham today before the arrival of the new head coach is finalised.

McFarlane led spirited Chelsea to a credible 1-1 draw at Manchester City on Sunday as Enzo Fernandez snatched a stoppage-time equaliser for the visitors.

After the game, he was asked whether he would be back in charge of the U21s on Wednesday for their match against Benfica.

He replied: "I think that will depend on when the new manager comes in. So if the new manager comes in before Wednesday, I'll be looking forward to taking the Under-21s against Benfica.

"I've got a really good Under-21s group that are doing well this year and a lot to play for in the second part of the season.

"And if he's not in and the club needs me to continue and take the Fulham game, I'm more than happy to do that as well. So it's all dependent on what happens with the new manager."

Chelsea are expected to make significant progress on the appointment of Rosenior today, while Gary O'Neil is emerging as a strong contender for the Strasbourg job.

The Blues play Fulham away on Wednesday in the west London derby before travelling to Charlton Athletic on Saturday in the FA Cup.
