Julian Alvarez's agent has confirmed that Liverpool did not make a move to sign the Atletico Madrid star during the transfer window.
Despite early summer rumors linking the Reds with the former Manchester City forward, it appears they never made an official approach. Liverpool instead secured the signing of Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt. This was followed by the record-breaking acquisition of Alexander Isak from Newcastle for a staggering £125 million ($170.5 million).
Speculation about Liverpool's interest in Alvarez quickly subsided once the club confirmed its moves for Ekitike and Isak. Now, the player's agent, Fernando Hidalgo, has clarified the situation regarding claims that the Reds were pursuing his client.
"There were no official offers from Liverpool to sign Julian last season, and everything that has been said in this regard is false," Hidalgo told Erem News.
Hidalgo continued: "Last summer, there were no offers because Atletico de Madrid didn't want to sell the player, so negotiations didn't take place."
Unfortunately, Alvarez will not have the chance to face Liverpool when the Reds go head-to-head with Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday.
The Argentine international has been left out of the squad travelling to Merseyside due to an injury sustained over the weekend.
But Isak could make his debut for the Reds following his deadline-day move from Newcastle.
"There is definitely a chance because he is in the squad," said Liverpool manager Arne Slot on Tuesday when asked about Isak's involvement against Atletico.
"Then there's a chance to play. It's 100 percent sure that he will not play 90 minutes.
"It's already a Champions League game to look forward to, and it's a chance he could play tomorrow.
"The only thing that is sure is he will not play 90.
"All the rest we will see."
Ekitike will definitely be involved against Atletico after his superb start at Liverpool, scoring three goals and providing one assist from his first five appearances for the club.
