Jurgen Klopp agrees to new job just weeks after dismissing managerial return

Former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has accepted a fresh position with the German Football League (DFL), which he will undertake while maintaining his current responsibilities at the Red Bull Group.

It comes as Klopp ruled out the idea of returning to management anytime soon. The German coach officially departed Liverpool 16 months ago, passing the managerial baton to Arne Slot during the summer of 2024.

Klopp spent nine years at Anfield, guiding the club to Champions League glory in 2019 and securing the Premier League crown 12 months later. Throughout his tenure at Anfield, he also claimed the FA Cup on one occasion and captured the League Cup on two separate occasions, among other trophies.

He has refrained from accepting another coaching position since his departure. Rather, Klopp has been serving as global head of soccer at Red Bull since January. His responsibilities encompass clubs such as RB Leipzig, Salzburg, and New York Red Bulls.

In addition to that position, Klopp will now undertake a second role with the DFL; the group confirmed his inclusion in an expert panel designed to enhance the nation's footballing landscape.

DFL confirmed in a statement: "The expert group will address, among other things, the training and integration of talented players as well as the further development of club standards and structures.

"Initial results are to be discussed in the league committees in spring 2026 and subsequently with all 36 clubs."

DFL managing director Marc Lenz commented: "We are convinced that the financial, legal, and sporting frameworks must be right to keep the Bundesliga and German football consistently competitive.

"We need to draw the right conclusions together. The expert group will provide valuable input in this regard."

Klopp will be sharing the panel with esteemed soccer figures such as former Real Madrid star Sami Khedira, Bayern Munich's Jochen Sauer, and Eintracht Frankfurt's Markus Krosche.

This follows recent comments from the ex-Liverpool manager suggesting he has no immediate plans to return to the dugout.

In a candid chat with The Athletic, Klopp revealed: "I was super happy with the way Liverpool performed. I watched some games. But it is not like, 'Oh, it's Saturday!'

"I didn't know when games started. I was just out. I played sports. We enjoyed life, spent time with the grandkids, completely normal stuff, knowing I will work again. But knowing as well, that I don't want to work as a coach anymore."

When probed on whether he would never return to coaching, he replied: "That's what I think.

"But you don't know. I'm 58. If I started again at 65, everybody will say, 'You said you'll never do it again!' Er, sorry, I thought 100 percent (when I said it)! That is what I think now. I don't miss anything."
