All is not well at Liverpool at the moment. The anger that greeted the draw against Tottenham made way for an almost begrudging acceptance after defeat to Brighton.

This is no longer a dip, this is stagnation. Fans are now going into games expecting to drop points - less than 12 months after lifting the Premier League title.

It’s a damning state of affairs for Arne Slot. The Dutchman will need to pull something big out of his sleeve before the end of the season in order to win back some of those supporters. Some though are already long gone.

The manner in which Liverpool has slumped this season has been the most disappointing aspect. Fans are watching an expensively put-together group of players who don’t appear to be up for the fight of the Premier League.

It’s a far cry from the days of Jurgen Klopp’s management. Under the German, you could guarantee that the Reds wouldn’t just roll over, which is what it feels like now.

This of all weeks will no doubt get supporters longing for those good old days. Left to stew on another dismal result for nearly two weeks, and with Klopp making his return to the Anfield dugout in just a few days.

Don’t get too excited - it’s purely just a short visit, with the 58-year-old back to assist Sir Kenny Dalglish for the Legends game against Borussia Dortmund, another of his former sides.

No doubt there will be some fans at Anfield on Saturday wishing he could stay longer - and that might not be as farfetched an idea as it might seem.

Klopp hasn’t shown much interest in returning to management since taking up his controversial role at Red Bull, but this week, there was perhaps the biggest hint yet that he could step back into the fold.

Brushing off reports that Real Madrid has been in contact with him, Klopp said: "I've said that a thousand times already, but of course I'm not thinking about it at all right now. There's no reason to, thankfully.

“And as for the future, I'm not quite finished as a coach yet. So who knows what might comeup in the next few years. But there are absolutely no plans in that regard."

Those four words - “I’m not quite finished”. Clearly, there is still some desire left to get back into management. And if that’s the case, why not back at Liverpool?

Clearly, Anfield has left a big impression on him. He has already said he will never manage another club in England, and he has teased us with the possibility of taking the Liverpool job again.

He would be welcomed back with open arms by supporters, and it would be the easiest of wins for FSG at a time when morale is plummeting in the stands.

Of course, it very much remains a long shot, and there is the old adage that you should never go back. But if one of the world’s best managers is available, you’d be crazy not to at least try and tempt him back.

As things stand, it does look as though Liverpool will continue to back Slot, but if results keep going the way they are, the club will face having to make a big decision. And in that case, Klopp’s return would be quite the coup.
