Kalvin Phillips completed a 380-mile round journey from London to feature in the Carabao Cup for Manchester City on Wednesday.

The midfielder made his first competitive appearance for City in 21 months, just a day after partner Ashleigh Behan gave birth to their second child. Phillips replaced Nico Gonzalez against Huddersfield Town, making a seven-minute cameo in his first outing of the season.

City won the match 2-0, thanks to goals from Phil Foden and Savinho in Yorkshire. After the game, Pep Guardiola revealed Phillips had made the trip shortly after becoming a father again on Tuesday.

"It’s a good moment he came back for a few minutes," Guardiola said. "He became a father to Ari Phillips and he came this morning from London.

"He is now going back to London to his wife and the kids."

Before the clash, Guardiola hinted that the 29-year-old could become a regular in the team. "He's coming back, training with us and we will see what happens," he added.

"He's coming from surgery so now has to make training sessions and maybe some minutes in some games."

Phillips took to Instagram after the game and wrote: "It’s been a long 3 and a half months out and there’s still work to be done personally.

"Nevertheless, I’m so happy to be back out on the pitch again in a City shirt. Thank you to the fans for your support, it doesn’t go unnoticed. Onto the next round Man City."

Phillips spent last season on loan at Ipswich Town, where he made 22 appearances for the Tractor Boys.
