Kalvin Phillips has joined Sheffield United on loan until the end of the season after limited opportunities at Manchester City
Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has praised Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips following his loan switch to the Championship club. Phillips, who joined City from Leeds United in 2022, has struggled to establish himself in Pep Guardiola's squad, resulting in temporary moves to West Ham, Ipswich Town and now Sheffield United.
Phillips' sole appearance for City this campaign came during the closing seven minutes of their Carabao Cup victory over Huddersfield in September. This sparked rumours about his future ahead of the January transfer window, with a possible return to Leeds being discussed.
Reports suggested that City were prepared to entertain bids of approximately £10million for the 30-year-old, but ultimately another loan arrangement was agreed.
Following the deadline-day transfer to Bramall Lane, Wilder described it as a 'good 48-72 hours' for the club and offered his initial thoughts on Phillips, emphasising his readiness for the challenge ahead and praising his attitude following the move.
"It's been a good few days in terms of getting the likes of Joe and Kalvin through the building and Leo as well," Wilder said. "Kalvin doesn't need any help.
"He's had a brilliant career and I'm not there to rub his head."
Regarding Phillips' fitness, Wilder confirmed: "I've got to say he's in good shape.
"He just needs to get into a rhythm, getting opportunities, which he will do, but maybe two, three or four games, and get himself back going again.

"He's impressed everybody with his attitude already, even though he's only been in the building for 24 hours, and same for Joe.
"Both wanted to come, which is a massive tick in the box for our club. And they both want to help."
Phillips, along with new arrivals Leo Hjelde and Joe Rothwell, was presented to supporters during Tuesday's 3-1 victory over Oxford City at Bramall Lane.
The midfielder's expertise will prove vital for the Blades throughout the rest of the season as they battle for a play-off position, with the team currently eight points adrift of sixth-placed Wrexham.
The City loanee could make his first appearance for the club in their home fixture against promotion-chasing Middlesbrough on Monday (February 9).
