The former Manchester City midfielder joined Serie A side Napoli on a free transfer in the summer but is now set for a spell on the sidelines.

Former Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne has confirmed that he has undergone surgery on an injury and is set for some time on the sidelines.

The 34-year-old left City at the end of his contract in the summer after 10 years with the club. He completed a move to Serie A side Napoli on a free transfer.

De Bruyne quickly established himself as a key player for the Italian side. In his 11 appearances in all competitions, he has scored four goals and provided a further two assists.

His season has now been disrupted by injury, with a hamstring problem causing him to miss the last three games in both Serie A and the Champions League.

He has now taken to social media to give the latest update on his injury. “Hi everyone, as you all know I will be sidelined for a while,” he wrote on Instagram.

“The good news is that the surgery went perfect. “My way back has already started! Thank you for all the messages!”

The injury occurred during Napoli’s 3-1 win over Inter at the end of last month. De Bruyne opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 33rd minute, but clutched the back of his leg after striking the ball and was substituted shortly after.

It was later confirmed that he suffered a high-grade tear to a hamstring muscle and required surgery.

It’s been reported by The Sun that the injury has caused fears that he could now miss next summer’s World Cup. A timeline for recovery is reported to have been put at at least four months.

The injury is similar to one he suffered when playing for Man City in 2023. The midfielder underwent surgery and made his comeback four months later.
