Kylian Mbappe, the Real Madrid star, has stopped short of predicting a Premier League win for Liverpool next season, despite acknowledging the strengths of Arne Slot's team.
The Reds are currently the only team with a perfect record in the top flight ahead of the international break, reinforcing their status as many people's favorites to retain their title. Slot's players further cemented their favorites tag last weekend with a 1-0 victory over Arsenal, their closest rival from last season, at Anfield.
While the game may not linger long in the memory, Liverpool's recruitment strategy is one reason why so many are backing the Reds this season. Despite the team's Premier League triumph in 2024-25, Slot has not allowed complacency to set in, with Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, and Florian Wirtz among the notable new signings.
Naturally, the Reds won't be so presumptuous as to assume they'll easily clinch the title again. Arsenal, Manchester City, and Chelsea are all expected to challenge Liverpool this season.
However, it might surprise some to learn that one of the world's top soccer players isn't tipping the Reds for Premier League glory.
Speaking to BILD, Mbappe was asked for his prediction for the Premier League this season, and his response will have taken many by surprise.
"Of course, Liverpool has to be mentioned first and foremost, as they're determined to win one title after another," the Frenchman explained.
"But I also have high hopes for Arsenal, because the core of the team has known each other for a long time, and that's a crucial factor in football. And Manchester City is always at the forefront anyway, with Pep Guardiola and Erling Haaland."
When pressed for a definitive answer, Mbappe replied: "That's tough. Maybe Arsenal, maybe it will be their year. It would certainly be easier to say City or Liverpool."
The Reds aren't solely focused on domestic success this campaign, with the Champions League also featuring prominently in their objectives.
When questioned about his Champions League winner prediction, Mbappe's response proved far more straightforward and decisive.
"I always say Real Madrid," he explained. "But there are many good teams in Europe, a lot. We saw that last year was great with the new Champions League format.
"This year will be even better. It will be interesting to see who prevails in the end."
Liverpool resumes Premier League duties next Sunday when it travels to Burnley. The Champions League subsequently returns on September 17 as the Reds welcome Atletico Madrid to Anfield.
