Ledley King has said that Tottenham have done something very important this summer, and it is not any of the players the club have signed.
Tottenham have signed four players so far this summer: Mathys Tel, Kota Takai, Mohammed Kudus and Joao Palhinha, but most Spurs fans would understandably feel that there is still a lot of work to be done.
While Spurs have lost one important player in Heung-min Son, it looks like another of their most senior men, Cristian Romero, is set to stay at Tottenham.
Romero has attracted plenty of interest from sides in Spain this summer, and it appeared at times that the Spurs vice-captain would be on his way out.
Ledley King on the importance of keeping Cristian Romero at Tottenham
While Spurs fans would not want to count the chickens before they hatch, it seems unlikely that the Argentine will depart at this stage, particularly given that Atletico Madrid have turned their attention away from the Spurs centre-back.
Ledley King has admitted that it was crucial that the Lilywhites hung onto their best players, pointing out that it is not something the club were able to do during his playing days.
When asked about the importance of keeping Romero, the Tottenham legend told Football.London: “It’s important, it’s always important [to keep a winner].
“During my period, I would say it was very difficult to keep players. Whenever you felt like you were building on something, we seemed to lose one or two of your best players, and it makes it very difficult.
“So yeah, you always want to keep your best players, but again, it’s something that is not easy to do, but of course, as a football club, we never want to sell our best players, that’s for sure.”
King makes claim about Spurs’ centre-back stocks
It has been reported by some sources that Thomas Frank still wants to add another centre-back to his squad before the start of the season.
However, King feels that the heart of the Spurs defence is not a priority position, insisting that the North Londoners are not short of quality options at centre-back.
The 44-year-old added, “I think Romero is brilliant. I think the partnership between him and Micky van de Ven is a great fit. They’re different in their styles, but that works well.
“Also, there’s some young talent coming through, and Kevin Danso coming in last season, and when he had to play, he looked very good as well, so I do feel that we’re quite strong in that central defensive area.
“Ben Davies comes in as well when he has to in difficult circumstances again and never lets the team down. So I think we’re quite strong in that position at the moment.”
