A new report has suggested that Daniel Levy was not the one who decided to step down, but was rather pushed, with Tottenham’s majority owners, ENIC, making the change in order to prioritise sporting success at the club.
The news of Levy stepping down as executive chairman of Tottenham came out of the blue on Thursday night, catching everyone off guard.
The news of Levy’s departure has stunned the Spurs fan base, leading to plenty of speculation about what is likely to follow.
There have been suggestions that the Lewis family are now considering a full sale of Tottenham, but a new report has now suggested that their motivations for pushing Levy out the door may be entirely different.
Lewis Family want to prioritise sustained sporting success at Tottenham
According to The Telegraph, Levy’s departure was set in motion at the start of the year as a result of ENIC prioritising sustained sporting success.
The report claims that sources close to the Lewis family are now suggesting that the change has been made to put sporting success at the forefront and usher in a ‘new era’ at Tottenham.
The club’s majority owners set in motion an operational and sporting review at the start of 2025, which was carried out by American consultants, the Gibb River Group. Tavistock, the investment firm founded by Lewis, were also allegedly involved in the review.
It was decided that Tottenham required further investment from the Lewis family trust, with Levy and other senior figures at the club being interviewed several times as part of the review.
Lewis family want a ‘fresh approach’ to running Spurs
The Telegraph explain that when they contacted Tottenham Hotspur for information about the review and Levy’s eventual departure, the club declined to comment.
However, Spurs fans will be encouraged by what one well-placed source close to the Lewis family told the outlet about their next steps.
The source told the publication: “Generations of the Lewis family support this special football club, and they want what the fans want – more wins more often.
“This is why you have seen recent changes, new leadership and a fresh approach. In Vinai, Thomas (Frank) and Peter Charrington, they believe they are backing the right team to deliver on this. This is a new era.”
