Chelsea have endured another mixed season but there is one clear solution to a major problem that both Liam Rosenior and Enzo Maresca experienced
Liam Rosenior is currently facing the same centre-back problems that played a role in Enzo Maresca's departure from Chelsea. The Blues have conceded 17 goals in their last seven games, with back-to-back 3-0 defeats arriving before the international break.
A 8-2 aggregate defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League exposed some clear issues that Rosenior must solve. Perhaps the most obvious concern is the three out of five changes in the defensive third across the two legs which makes it nearly impossible to build consistency and form.
Some of those were enforced with Trevoh Chalobah and Reece James picking up injuries that they are unlikely to be back from after the domestic pause. The absence of Levi Colwilll is also a major blow with Maresca at least having the Cobham academy graduate available for the majority of his tenure.
The former Chelsea boss was desperate for the club to sign an experienced central defender last summer but that did not end up happening. Regardless of who is charge for next season, that cannot be the same scenario that plays out over the coming months.

Exactly what type of defender comes in remains unclear with the transfer model under their current ownership much more likely to sign a young player that has high potential.
That is not necessarily a bad route to take despite the criticism faced from not signing players over a certain age with Arsenal signing William Saliba when he was 18, as the perfect example. After a handful of loan spells, he is now arguably one of the best centre-backs in the world.
Finding ready-made players for the Premier League at such a young age is quite difficult but not impossible with one of those emerging on Chelsea's radar recently. According to Bild, the Blues are interested in Tottenham's Luka Vuskovic.
The 19-year-old has spent the season on-loan at Hamburg and has developed significantly even after making huge impact at Westerlo the previous season. The teenager has not played a competitive game for Spurs but he grabbed a goal and assist during a pre-season friendly back in July 2025.
Given the Lilywhites' perilous position, Vuskovic could end up not playing again for his current club with interest from Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Liverpool, alongside Chelsea, making it unlikely that he plays Championship football.
It would be quite the battle for Chelsea to win the race for his signature but he is the perfect addition considering how the club operate in the transfer window.
Having Vuskovic and Colwill as his starting centre-backs next season would likely be the dream scenario but there is still work to be done in this campaign for that to even be possible.
That is because the former would almost certainly rule out Stamford Bridge as an option if Champions League football is not being played there. Chelsea currently sit sixth in the table with games against both Manchester clubs up next and a minimum of four points will likely be required.
