Liverpool striker Jayden Danns is set for a prolonged spell on the sidelines after suffering a hamstring injury.
The 19-year-old sustained the issue in last week’s Under-21s’ defeat against Ipswich Town. Danns captained the underage side in Suffolk, but lasted just 21 minutes before he had to be replaced.
Liverpool announced earlier this week that Danns’ injury would be “reviewed further by the club’s medical staff.” While the club has not yet announced his prognosis, he is expected to remain out of action for a considerable period. It’s a crushing blow for the attacker who has looked so promising in his brief cameos under Arne Slot.
The Dutchman is known to be a keen admirer of Danns and has selected the youngster five times despite his injury issues.
He missed the first months of Slot’s premiership through injury and did not train under the Dutchman until November. Danns featured in four matches across December and January before a decision was made to send the teenager on loan in the final stages of the winter window.
Danns agreed a loan move to Sunderland but never played a minute for the north-east club as it managed to gain promotion to the Premier League.
A stress fracture in his back was discovered during the player’s medical, and he spent the majority of the second half of the season recuperating at Kirkby.
That lasted into the summer, when Liverpool cautiously reintegrated Danns into first-team action. The forward was not sent on loan in the summer window, partly to allow his workload to be managed.
That Slot believed Danns could play a role for the first team was also significant in that decision, as was underlined when he came off the bench in last week’s Carabao Cup victory over Southampton.
Now this fresh setback means Danns will once again face a prolonged period away from the team, although no timeline has been put on his potential recovery at this stage.
Danns' opportunity to earn first-team minutes was reduced when Alexander Isak arrived on transfer deadline day, but the academy prospect is seen as a squad option by Slot.
He was named on the bench in the Champions League win over Atletico Madrid and would likely have received more playing opportunities were it not for his latest injury.
Danns has played 10 senior matches for the Reds and has scored three goals. He also featured in the 2024 Carabao Cup final victory over Chelsea.
