Liverpool has failed to have a single player named in Thomas Tuchel's England squad for the upcoming games against Uruguay and Japan, despite a whopping 35 players being selected.

Tuchel named his 35-man squad on Friday morning with some surprise call-ups, with ex-Reds Jordan Henderson and Jarrell Quansah both included in an experimental squad list. There was no room for Curtis Jones or Joe Gomez, however, despite the midfielder in particular enjoying a solid season.

Elsewhere, there was no room for former Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has recently returned to the Real Madrid starting XI over in Spain. It was initially suggested he could lose his place to Quansah, but ultimately both ended up being snubbed.

With Reece James injured and likely out for at least a month, Alexander-Arnold seemed to have a much stronger case to be included in the team. He's made 20 appearances this season after struggling to get settled due to an injury.

But he'll now have to wait until the next round of international fixtures in June to make his case for a spot in the World Cup squad.

Selecting his team, Tuchel defended the decision to cast a wide net, explaining that he wants to use the two-week window to give more players a chance and get a grasp of who will be involved at the World Cup this summer.

“We decided to divide it into basically two camps almost," he said. "So we bring players in that we haven’t seen who haven’t played so much to open up the picture, and the competition for plane tickets to the US.

“Then from Friday and Saturday, a group of players will come into camp – ten or eleven players who get a rest before and we will then go with a new group and mix of players into the match against Japan.”
