Liverpool has confirmed its plans for a permanent tribute to Diogo Jota and Andre Silva, the brothers who passed away in a tragic car crash in northern Spain earlier this summer.
Fans have laid thousands of tributes — including flowers, scarves and jerseys — outside Anfield. The memorial grew in size over a number of days and weeks and was visited by Liverpool players past and present, and the family of the brothers.
Liverpool confirmed earlier this month that it would retire the number 20 shirt across all levels of the club in honor of Jota. And it has now detailed what will come next in its process of creating more permanent tributes.
The tributes that have been laid outside Anfield have now been removed over the course of the last week. They are being safely stored.
Floral tributes will be composted and used in flower beds across all club sites, while the remaining elements are to be recycled. They will later be used to create a permanent memorial sculpture at Anfield. In the meantime, a temporary area of reflection has been created at the stadium, should people wish to pay their respects.
If supporters purchase replica jerseys with ‘Diogo J. 20’ printed on the back, all profits will go to LFC Foundation, the club’s official charity. The Foundation has committed to creating a grassroots football program in Jota's name.
Later today, Liverpool will take on AC Milan in Hong Kong. A floral tribute will be laid before kick-off. When the Reds' new kits are launched on August 1, players will display their own tribute with a specially made ‘Forever 20’ emblem printed into their shirts and stadium jackets, which will remain in place for the season.
A special fan mosaic and a minute of silence are planned for the first game of the Premier League season, against Bournemouth on Friday August 15. The Reds are also set to take on Athletic Club in a friendly double-header a couple of weeks before.
