Liverpool is reportedly eyeing up Steven Gerrard to replace Arne Slot on a temporary basis should the Dutchman be fired.
Liverpool’s title defence has faltered badly, with six defeats in the team's last nine league games. A brief lift came with a 2-0 win over West Ham, but momentum quickly stalled as Slot’s side produced another flat display in a 1-1 home draw with Sunderland just three days later.
Things worsened on Saturday when Leeds stunned Liverpool with a stoppage-time equalizer from Ao Tanaka, finishing off a dramatic, six-goal second half at Elland Road. The plan comes after Mohamed Salah delivered a series of explosive post-match remarks aimed at his relationship with Slot, even suggesting someone at the club doesn’t want him there.
He claimed he was “thrown under the bus,” casting major doubt over his future at Anfield.
DaveOCKOP reported that Gerrard is being considered as a potential interim option should Liverpool decide to part ways with Slot.
Gerrard recently admitted he came “very close” to returning to Rangers but ultimately declined the job after discussions that followed Russell Martin’s exit.
The 45-year-old previously led Rangers from 2018 to 2021, securing the 2020–21 Scottish Premiership title, before moving on to roles with Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq.
A move back to Anfield would offer a powerful storyline for a club legend who came through the academy and cemented his status as one of Liverpool’s greatest ever players.
Liverpool is also thought to hold an interest in Julian Nagelsmann, who is set to guide Germany into next summer’s World Cup and may become available once the tournament concludes.
Just months after leading Liverpool to the Premier League crown, Slot now finds himself facing major uncertainty over his position as manager amid the team’s alarming dip in form.
But he remains confident that he can turn the situation around at Anfield. “There is every reason to be positive”, Slot told reporters after the Leeds game.
When questioned last week about his relationship with the club’s hierarchy, the Dutchman responded: "Yeah, but not in the sense that they tell me every single minute, 'We support you, we support you, we support you.'
"We talk a lot. If we are winning, last season, and if we are losing. And then they are helpful to me, to the team. So yeah, we do have those conversations, but they don’t call me in every single minute of the day to tell me that they still trust me.
"We do have the normal conversations, and in those conversations, I feel the trust. But I haven’t spoken to them after this game yet, so let’s see!”
