Florian Wirtz has kicked off his season in style, netting his first competitive goal since joining the Anfield ranks.
It's been a tough few weeks for Wirtz, who has provided just one assist in his four competitive appearances for Liverpool since joining from Bayer Leverkusen. He's also yet to find the net in the Premier League.
But the German playmaker scored his country's third goal in a 3-1 triumph over Northern Ireland, helping Julian Nagelsmann's players recover from their previous defeat in Slovakia. Serge Gnabry and Nadiem Amiri had found the back of the net on either side of Isaac Price's equalizer for the visitors before Wirtz took charge of a free-kick with just 18 minutes left on the clock.
His spectacular strike left goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell helpless, sparking jubilation among fans on social media.
"Absolute stunner goal from Flo, now he better line [up] for free kicks so we see more of those goals from him," one Liverpool supporter posted on Instagram.
"Silenced all the haters," another fan commented.
Wirtz's teammates and former colleagues also expressed their admiration for the stunning goal. Curtis Jones responded with four fire emojis, while ex-Leverkusen star Karim Bellarabi posted a heart-eyes emoji under the official Liverpool account's post.
Following a disappointing 2-0 loss in their first World Cup qualifier away in Slovakia, Wirtz and his teammates were determined to bounce back.
"We all know the last match was a disaster, and we wanted to do better today," he said.
"Against Slovakia, we didn't bring enough energy to the pitch – we improved on that today. It was a good performance and we can definitely be pleased with it."
Germany's manager Nagelsmann acknowledged the resilience of Northern Ireland, who proved difficult to overcome until Amiri and Wirtz's second-half efforts.
"I think today was all about momentum," Nagelsmann said. "The opposition made it difficult – they just kept playing long balls, which are never easy to defend. They had one chance and it was a great strike.
"We started the game well and took a deserved lead. The equaliser unsettled us a bit, but that's understandable after Thursday [against Slovakia].
"The final 30 minutes looked more like us – before that it was a mixed bag. In the end, we deserved the win – and we needed it."
