Liverpool gets 'merciless' verdict as German media reacts to Florian Wirtz display vs Frankfurt

2 months ago 17

Liverpool tasted victory for the first time in a month as the Reds came from a goal behind to win emphatically against Frankfurt. The Reds' most recent victory prior to Wednesday's win in the Champions League came against Southampton in the Carabao Cup, but by half-time in Germany it was clear the game was going only one way.

Frankfurt had shipped 18 goals in its previous five games going into the game against Liverpool, and against an attack boasting Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz and Cody Gakpo, a clean sheet was never likely to be on the cards for the home team.

Understandably, German reporters were more keen to focus on the team from the Bundesliga's shortcomings rather than Liverpool's quality on the night, but there was some praise from the German media for the Reds.

Web.de said that Liverpool "blasted" the opposition, saying: "Eintracht Frankfurt continues to learn the hard way in the Champions League. After the 5-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid, they also suffered a 5-1 defeat against Liverpool.

"An efficient Liverpool mercilessly dashed Eintracht Frankfurt's hopes of a magical night in the Champions League. The English champions, with two-time assist provider Florian Wirtz, blasted the Hesse side 5-1."

Kicker noted how the game went to plan for Frankfurt inside the opening half an hour before the away team turned the screw.

"Within the first 30 minutes, Frankfurt's plan worked," it said. "Frankfurt started the game like a house on fire and then left the Reds to play the game. Their idea: wait for the visitors to make a mistake and then strike with icy coldness.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot

Arne Slot's team ended a four-game losing streak in Germany

"And that's exactly what the Eintracht players did. Rasmus Kristensen capped off a perfect counterattack with the opening goal... Everything that happened after that is a different story.

"After the break, Frankfurt, with their two-goal deficit, continued to be dominated and couldn't find their way back into the game."

Eurosport touched on Florian Wirtz's good performance after he registered his first Champions League assists for Liverpool. It said: "Wirtz played with commitment and was rewarded after halftime by setting up goals for Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai.

"Liverpool ended their losing streak with a bang; manager Arne Slot's team had previously suffered four consecutive defeats for the first time since 2014. In the Champions League, Liverpool have two wins, while Eintracht Frankfurt continue to have one win from three matches."
