Liverpool greats among 15 nominees for Premier League Hall of Fame

8 hours ago 2

Two Liverpool greats are among the 15 contenders to be inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame.

The English top flight announced the creation of its Hall of Fame in 2020, which is described as the “highest individual honor” that can be bestowed on those associated with the division. “The Hall of Fame recognises and celebrates individuals who have an exceptional record of success and have made a significant contribution to the Premier League since its inception in 1992”.

Since then, 24 names have been included in the Hall of Fame. Somewhat surprisingly, Steven Gerrard is the only Liverpool-affiliated player named, but that could change when two new inductees are named in 2025.

Ex-Reds Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen were among the 15 candidates announced on Monday, two of whom will be included in the Hall of Fame.

Sol Campbell, Michael Carrick, Jermain Defoe, Patrice Evra, Cesc Fabregas, Les Ferdinand, Eden Hazard, Gary Neville, Teddy Sheringham, David Silva, Yaya Toure, Edwin van der Sar, and Nemanja Vidic make up the shortlist, with fans able to vote for their preference via the Premier League’s website.

The fan poll is now open to the public. The results will be presented to the current Premier League Hall of Fame members, who will then vote on who should be inducted.

The decision will be announced on November 4.

Last year, Ashley Cole, John Terry, and Andy Cole joined the exclusive list, which includes two managers: Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger.

Alan Shearer, Thierry Henry, Roy Keane, Eric Cantona, Frank Lampard, Denis Bergkamp, Gerrard, and David Beckham were selected in the inaugural Hall of Fame.

Wayne Rooney, Patrick Vieira, Sergio Aguero, Didier Drogba, Vincent Kompany, Peter Schmeichel, Paul Scholes, Ian Wright, Tony Adams, Petr Cech, and Rio Ferdinand have since been added.

Players can only be inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame after they retire, so Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah cannot be nominated this time around.

Fowler and Owen would be worthy additions to the esteemed cohort of players. They are two of only 11 players to have netted 150-plus Premier League goals, and sit ninth and 11th respectively on the all-time scoring lists.

With the exception of Salah, none of those yet to be included in the Hall of Fame have netted more than Fowler’s 163 Premier League goals.
