Liverpool handed potential title boost in bad news for Mohamed Salah's teammate

4 hours ago 31

Manchester City has announced that Omar Marmoush will be absent from Sunday's Premier League game against Manchester United due to a knee injury sustained while on international duty.

The striker, who plays alongside Liverpool star Mohamed Salah at international level, was injured in the fourth minute of Egypt's goalless draw with Burkina Faso on Tuesday after a heavy tackle. Despite trying to continue, he was substituted five minutes later.

Marmoush returned to Cairo on crutches on Wednesday morning and underwent a scan in Egypt to determine the severity of the damage. City has now confirmed that the 26-year-old will miss the upcoming derby.

In a statement, City said: "Manchester City FC can confirm that Omar Marmoush has sustained a knee injury whilst on international duty with Egypt.

"The City striker suffered the injury in the early stages of Egypt’s World Cup qualifying match with Burkina Faso on Tuesday evening.

"Initial results on a scan performed in Egypt indicate he will not be available for the Manchester derby on Sunday, and he will now return to Manchester for more assessment and to begin his rehabilitation. Everyone at City wishes Omar a speedy recovery."

The Egyptian FA described the injury as a "knee ligament bruise," but Marmoush will undergo additional tests at City to assess the full extent of the issue.

Having started City's two prior Premier League matches this season on the left wing, he is now expected to be replaced by Jeremy Doku this weekend.

Marmoush's injury could have a big impact on the Premier League title race, which Liverpool currently leads by two points after a flawless start to the season.

City has been the dominant force in English soccer in recent years under Pep Guardiola, winning the Premier League title in 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024, among other trophies. City's success has limited Salah's Liverpool to just two Premier League titles.

City has spent heavily over the last 12 months after struggling during the 2024-25 campaign, with the Manchester club hoping that Marmoush can become its new talisman.

The 26-year-old arrived from Eintracht Frankfurt in January and did well during the second half of last season, scoring seven Premier League goals. If he's injured for an extended period of time, that could stop City from keeping up with Liverpool in the title race.

City is currently six points behind Liverpool in the table, having won just once in the Premier League this season.
