Liverpool has been handed a timely boost in their pursuit of striker Yan Diomande, after RB Leipzig’s chairman openly acknowledged the forward’s potential departure.
Liverpool fans are facing disappointment in the January transfer window, with little chance of a new attacking signing—or any addition at all. Saturday’s draw with Burnley highlighted the squad’s ongoing lack of depth and quality with a growing injury list.
Yet, despite persistent links to players such as Diomande, Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards seem hesitant to make a move before the season’s halfway point.
Diomande has enjoyed a breakout season in Germany making 10 goal contributions in only 16 appearances for Leipzig, sparking speculation about a potential big-money move in 2026.

Speaking to Sky Germany, Mintzlaff admitted that while the club would prefer not to part with the youngster after just one season, financial realities could make a transfer unavoidable. “You can’t let him go after just one year,” he said. “But the truth is that there are also other top clubs out there and we have to generate revenue.”
Florian Plettenberg also confirmed that Liverpool is one of the ‘top clubs’ monitoring Diomande ahead of a move next summer.
“As revealed, FC Bayern are very keen on him for the summer. However, it depends on the price. Top clubs from England are also interested, including Chelsea, Man City, Liverpool and others,” said Plettenberg.

Pacey, direct, and an increasingly potent goal threat, Diomande seems to embody the qualities Liverpool’s attack currently lacks. The Ivory Coast international is still developing, and his future looks even brighter after openly admitting his support for the club.
“I want to play at Anfield, I want to play for Liverpool,” he reportedly said in French. “I’m a big Liverpool fan. My father’s dream is to see me play for Liverpool.”
It appears very unlikely that Liverpool will pursue any signings this month. Work is already being planned for potential summer additions, and any discussions regarding Diomande would likely be part of that long-term strategy. Clubs like Chelsea and Manchester City aren’t hesitant to act in January, and if either makes a substantial offer, Liverpool could once again miss out.
Liverpool.com says: His obvious affinity for Liverpool could play a role in negotiations, as multiple clubs are expected to express interest in him in 2026 and beyond. With the Reds looking to strengthen and future-proof its attack, the club could use this to its advantage. While a January move seems improbable, this is certainly one to monitor ahead of the summer window.
