Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has admitted that he once played for Everton when he was a teenager — but has never said that publicly before.

Speaking on The Added Time podcast, Fowler outlined that while he has kept it quiet, he actually played a game for Liverpool's city rival as a teenager. He was playing well above his age group at the time and later went on to play 369 games for the Reds, scoring 183 goals in the process.

"Look, I grew up as an Everton fan," Fowler said. "I think that’s common knowledge, but the first scout that came up to me was Jim Aspinall, who is sadly no longer with us, but he was adamant he wanted me to ply my trade at Liverpool.

"I actually played a game for Everton. I was 14 and played an U18 game. I came on as a substitute; I was tiny when I was 14 and I think we won the game.

"So, I have actually worn a shirt for Everton. I don’t think I’ve ever told anyone this, but I have worn an Everton shirt and won a game at Bellefield."

Fowler is not the only Liverpool legend to grow up as a Blue. Jamie Carragher famously switched allegiances when he became a Reds player and began to support them.

Ahead of Saturday's Merseyside derby at Anfield, Virgil van Dijk was asked whether he would speak to new signings like Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike about the Everton fixture and the unique challenge that it can present.

"Obviously you don't let them work it out for themselves," Van Dijk told reporters on Wednesday. "They have a feeling for it but the manager will have meetings, we all speak about it in the next couple of days.

"It's a game to look forward to and I think everyone will do. They don't know yet but we will speak about it; I'm not worried.

"The guys who are here played in good stadiums, good games not the Merseyside derby obviously — but I am confident they will be absolutely fine."

Alexander Isak made his Liverpool debut against Atletico Madrid. "Do you ask that from David [Moyes]?" Slot replied when asked whether Isak will feature in the derby.

"I was positively surprised by how fit he was during that 60 minutes but that maybe, probably, tells you that it might be a difference to sign a 20-year-old from a different league or a 25 or 26-year-old that is used to playing in this league.

"Although he only trained for two weeks, he has so many games under his belt that he is probably more able to be ready for 60."

Liverpool.com says: Everton rarely makes things easy in the derby but Liverpool should have enough to get the job done at Anfield. Ideally, the Reds would be able to get over the line without the need for another late goal...
