Liverpool might be on the brink of feeling the fallout from its sole summer transfer window blip - the botched move for Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace.
The defender was poised to don the Liverpool jersey on deadline day, but his club put the brakes on the proposed transfer. This leaves the Reds in a holding pattern, a situation they had previously recognized as a potential outcome earlier this summer.
However, the swiftly changing market could make a free transfer increasingly tricky, as we cast our eyes towards 2026. Furthermore, head coach Arne Slot will now have to mull over his long-term game plan, weighing up his current defensive arsenal and Guehi as a possible target.
Here's a glance at some of the latest Liverpool transfer whispers...
Guehi alternative
Liverpool is eyeing Brighton center-back Jan Paul van Hecke as an alternative for Guehi.
TEAMtalk suggests that the Reds are one of three Premier League clubs tipped to swoop for Van Hecke in the New Year.
The Seagulls player still has two years left on his contract, with several clubs reportedly keeping tabs on his situation.
It's reported that Brighton has already made "initial advances" to keep him, while also noting that several teams have scouted him. Liverpool is reportedly among those clubs, having failed to secure Guehi on deadline day.
Quansah claim
The Mirror has reported that Liverpool cleverly included a buy-back clause in Jarell Quansah's contract when he moved to Bayer Leverkusen.
The center-back, who recently celebrated victory with England U21s at the European Championships, made the switch to Leverkusen in a deal potentially worth up to £35 million ($47.3 million).
It's understood that Liverpool has a £51 million ($68.9 million) buy-back option for Quansah. However, this clause will only come into effect from the summer of 2027.
Quansah confessed that leaving Liverpool was a difficult choice, but one necessary for his pursuit of more first-team action.
"It's tough to leave this club where you've built so many relationships and friendships," he said. "It was very emotional. For a long time, I didn't know what would happen this summer.
"I only knew one thing: I absolutely had to play regularly to improve. It's a bit crazy, and somehow it all happened so quickly. I haven't even had a chance to say a proper goodbye yet."
