Liverpool-linked defender hints at possible summer Premier League transfer

Liverpool could look to the transfer market this summer if Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez move on, despite the incoming arrival of Jeremy Jacquet. One possible target, Joel Ordonez, has made his feelings clear about a possible Premier Leagues switch

Joel Ordonez, who was linked with a January transfer to Liverpool, has expressed his desire to one day play in the Premier League and revealed he supported the Reds as a child.

Reports during the winter window claimed Liverpool came close with a bid for the Club Brugge defender, although Liverpool.com understands that was not the case. Ordonez was also linked with a January switch to Crystal Palace following Marc Guehi’s departure to Manchester City.

However, Ordonez remained in Belgium and can expect to attract further speculation this summer. Indeed, following comments in a recent interview with Gazet van Antwerpen, the 21-year-old has certainly not downplayed any transfer talk.

Asked about Palace’s reported bid, Ordonez implied the Eagles did express some interest in his signature.

“That could be. But I wanted to finish the season at Club anyway, so that wasn’t an option,” he said.

Asked about the possibility of one day moving to England, Ordonez said: “I hope so. It would be great if I could go to the Premier League.

“That’s my favorite league, which, given my size, should suit me well. As a child, I was also a big Liverpool fan.”

If that was a come-and-get plea, only Ordonez knows, but Liverpool executives will surely have taken note of those comments.

Yet, his chances of making a move to Anfield have been impacted by Liverpool’s decision to sign Jeremy Jacquet. The French defender, who is set to miss the rest of the Ligue 1 season with a shoulder injury, will meet up with his new team-mates this summer.

He will join Virgil van Dijk and Giovanni Leoni as Liverpool’s center-back options, with the futures of Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez remaining unclear.

The latter has attracted interest in each of the last two summers, while Konate’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season. Despite a plethora of rumors and reports, there has been no concrete update for months.

Should both Konate and Gomez depart, Liverpool may be forced to dip into the market again.

Ordonez, at 21, matches the age and profile of defender Liverpool typically looks to sign. He played all 10 of Brugge’s Champions League games this term, with the Ecuador international scoring in the play-off defeat to Atletico Madrid last month.

He signed for Brugge in 2022 and has established himself as one of Europe’s most highly regarded young centre-backs.
