Liverpool makes change to Champions League squad after signing Alexander Isak

2 hours ago 26

Liverpool has bolstered its Champions League squad with two fresh faces ahead of Wednesday's clash with Atletico Madrid at Anfield, as per UEFA's official website.

The Reds' roster for the opening league phase fixture of the season now includes 24 players. Goalkeeping duties are shared between Alisson Becker, Freddie Woodman, and Giorgi Mamardashvili. Woodman is poised to make his first appearance in a Liverpool matchday squad following his free transfer from Championship team Preston.

UEFA's rules allow clubs to name 12 substitutes for matches, three more than the Premier League permits. However, this does mean one of the 24 will be left out of the squad.

Curtis Jones appears to be the one who'll miss out after head coach Arne Slot confirmed in his pre-match press conference that the midfielder won't be able to play, despite being scheduled to train with the team again on Wednesday before the Atletico game.

Despite this, he still features on the official squad list, although an icon indicates that he is injured.

A similar image next to Alexis Mac Allister's name suggests that he is doubtful. This could explain why Trey Nyoni also makes the cut from the club's B List after being an unused substitute against Burnley in Jones' absence.

Young talent Jayden Danns is another player to keep an eye on, having not been included in a senior matchday squad since the season's commencement. Despite a preseason back injury, the striker has made two appearances for the U21s last month.

His potential inclusion could impact the playing time of new signing Alexander Isak, suggesting that he may not be a constant feature on the pitch.

Arne Slot, Liverpool's manager, has already confirmed that the new signing won't play the full 90 minutes tonight.

However, Slot did acknowledge that "there is definitely a chance" that the Swedish international will make his debut against Atletico.

Slot said: "There is definitely a chance, because he is in the squad. Then there is a chance to play. Normally I would say 99.9 per cent sure, but I can say it's 100 per cent sure he will not play 90 minutes. But he is part of the squad.

"It is already a Champions League game to look forward to but if people look forward to his playing time, that could mean that could happen tomorrow as well. The only thing that is sure is he will not play 90, and all the rest you will see tomorrow."
