A 47-year-old man from Liverpool has been charged with allegedly racially abusing the Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo during the Premier League clash between the sides on the opening match of the season at Anfield.

Semenyo posted on social media at the time that the night at Anfield would stay with him forever "because of how the entire football family stood together." He thanked his teammates, Liverpool players and fans, and the Premier League officials "who handled it professionally."

The game resumed four minutes after the reported abuse. Semenyo went on to score twice for Bournemouth, who lost 4-2 to Liverpool thanks to late goals from Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah.

At the time, the Football Association (FA) said: "Incidents of this nature have no place in our game, and we will work closely with the match officials, the clubs and the relevant authorities to establish the facts and ensure the appropriate action is taken."

And a police statement released on December 12 reads: "We can confirm that a Liverpool man has been charged in connection with an incident during a Liverpool FC match at Anfield in August.

"Mark Mogan, 47, of Templehill Close, Dovecot, has been charged with Racially Aggravated Section 5 Public Order against AFC Bournemouth player Antoine Semenyo, during the Premier League match on Saturday 16 August.

"Mogan has been conditionally bailed and will next appear at Liverpool Magistrates Court on Monday 22 December."
