Liverpool may be forced to rethink Marc Guehi plan as Man City enters transfer race

Liverpool may be compelled to pursue Marc Guehi in January after he became a priority target for Manchester City. City has reportedly identified Guehi as a key candidate for next summer as they prepare defensive reinforcements.

The England international's contract expires at the end of the season, having nearly joined Liverpool last September. A transfer to Anfield fell through on deadline day when Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish abandoned the deal at the last moment after being unable to find a replacement.

The Reds maintain their interest in the defender, although whether they'll return with a bid in January remains uncertain. Guehi is also anticipated to receive attractive proposals from overseas clubs, with Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid amongst those reportedly keen.

Speaking about the collapsed Liverpool move earlier this month, Guehi said: "I think everyone has this perception that it was difficult. Actually, it wasn't difficult. It wasn't difficult at all. Because when you're focused on what's the most important thing, it becomes easy.

"I know that God has a plan for me, and whatever that plan will be, will come into fruition at some point. But the goal and the focus has always been playing football and trying to do the best I can. And fortunately for me, I get to to it with people like Max (Lacroix)."

Guehi then added: "We have faith in Jesus Christ. And it's about exercising our faith. And as he said, even at the beginning, it was tough, but thankfully we continue doing that type of stuff. Continue praying. Continued having that fellowship with each other and the results came.

"But it's not even about that. It's about just being together with your brothers, and showing that faith and showing that we want to play for his glory.

"And given all the glory and everything that we do. Whether the things are going well or not, doing the same. So it's important that we just carry on doing what we are doing."

Meanwhile, Palace owner Parish has hinted at potential further departures from Selhurst Park, despite the Eagles being on track for a second consecutive European qualification.

"We've got one eye on players who we might have to replace in the summer," he disclosed earlier this month. "We're not going to throw it all on red and have a massive problem.

"Unless you want to be in a situation where you're constantly putting in money every year, there's a cash limit to what you can spend. You can't spend money you don't have.

"You have to have some guardrails as a club, or you'll build up big problems down the track. Everyone saw where prices went in the summer; it's a difficult landscape.

"There wasn't the right thing available at the right time when the finances were in place. There's no point in doing something for the sake of it. How are you going to get someone to come and tell them they are No.1 in Ebs [Eze] position if you still have him?".

"The one where we didn't, with Marc [Guehi], we kept him. You can't always make happen what you want to. We are where we are in the pecking order; you could ask why other clubs make bids for our players two weeks before the end of the window. I don't know why they did that."
