The disappointment of Arne Slot's second season at Liverpool could significantly impact his tenure at Anfield.

In a poor defense of their Premier League title, the Reds have often appeared as a mere shadow of their former selves throughout much of the campaign. Currently occupying sixth place in the league table after a record-breaking summer expenditure of around $600 million, it remains uncertain whether Liverpool's drastic underperformance could trigger a decision on Slot's future.

The Dutchman has over a year remaining on the three-year contract he signed to become Liverpool's head coach in 2024. With more than three months left of the season, this period could shape Slot's legacy as Liverpool.com examines the latest developments from Anfield.

Arne Slot replacement

With just over a year left on Slot's contract at Anfield, a decision will need to be made sooner rather than later about whether to extend or sever ties with the Dutchman.

Before his appointment in 2024, former Reds star Xabi Alonso was reportedly Liverpool's prime candidate to succeed Klopp.

But he ended up staying at Bayer Leverkusen for another season.

After a brief seven-month stint at Real Madrid, the Spaniard departed the club in January and has remained unemployed, reportedly choosing to wait until the summer to decide on his next move.

According to TEAMtalk, the Reds' owner, Fenway Sports Group, has singled out Alonso as the "only name" it wants as the club's head coach this summer.

The report also suggests that the dramatic downturn from last season's title-winning campaign has raised concerns among the club's top brass.

It's stated that while there are no current plans to replace Slot, the Dutchman is aware that he will need to account for this season's decline once the campaign concludes.

Klopp return

Despite showing no desire to return to the daily grind of soccer management, Jurgen Klopp has been linked with a sensational move to Atletico Madrid.

Klopp is currently working as Red Bull's head of global soccer.

Spanish TV programme El Chiringuito reported that the German is in advanced talks about taking over from Diego Simeone, who is in the final year of his contract.

The outlet claims that Klopp, 58, is in discussions with Mark Rowan, the CEO of Atletico's majority shareholders, Apollo.
