Liverpool's 2-0 loss to PSG in the Champions League quarterfinal could have been much worse, and the Reds will go into the second leg as longshots to advance

Liverpool faces a significant uphill climb to keep its Champions League hopes alive after falling 2-0 to Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of the quarterfinal on Wednesday.
The Reds were dominated in every facet of the game by PSG and now must overcome a two-goal deficit in next week’s second leg in order to stay alive in the competition and avoid a trophyless season in year two under Arne Slot.
The gap could have been much larger, but Luis Enrique’s side squandered multiple big chances to extend its lead while successfully keeping Liverpool’s attack at bay. It comes after Steven Gerrard says he wants the Reds to bring a former superstar back to Anfield after his heroics.

But despite what history says, PSG is one of the best teams in the world and poses a unique and menacing challenge, particularly for a Liverpool team currently in a period of struggle. It is clear Slot’s men may need to put forth their best performance of the season in order to have any hopes of advancing.

Following Wednesday’s defeat, oddsmakers rate Liverpool a +450 (9/2) shot to qualify for the Champions League semifinals.
Meanwhile, the defending champions are -700 (1/7) to book their place in the last four for a third consecutive year.
It will take a much-improved showing from Slot, who opted to play a back-five on Wednesday, a tactical switch that completely backfired as the Reds’ defense was unorganized throughout much of the 90 minutes, as well as key players like Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz, both of whom disappointed on the night.
Liverpool’s home form this Champions League campaign does offer some semblance of hope the Anfield crowd can push the team to an unlikely victory next Tuesday.
Outside of a disastrous 4-1 defeat to PSV in the league phase on Nov. 26, the Reds have won all four of their matches under the Anfield lights in Europe's top club competition this season, including victories over Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid.
