ANFIELD, LIVERPOOL // Liverpool made it three wins on the bounce in the Premier League with Florian Wirtz starring against the bottom side, Wolves.

Dutchman Ryan Gravenberch opened the scoring when he slotted home from a Jeremie Frimpong pull-back. Wirtz then found the back of the net with a shot from close range when he was played into acres of space by Hugo Ekitike.

From there, things should have been straightforward. Santiago Bueno, though, found the back of the net when Ibrahima Konate was outjumped by Tolu Arokodare from a corner just a couple of minutes into the second half, chopping the deficit in two.

Arne Slot's men held on, but were not always comfortable. Arokodare headed over from a good position with around 15 minutes to play, and there were nerves in the stands.

Winners

Wirtz getting off the mark with his first goal in the English game was a huge positive. Once again, as has often been the case lately, he was a strong performer. Linking nicely with Ekitike, which is another very good thing, Wirtz looked like he was enjoying himself here. He won't play many easier matches this season, but it was nice to see nonetheless.

Losers

He was not exactly a poor performer, but it would be a stretch to say Federico Chiesa made the most of his opportunity. A couple of times, he could have done more with the ball at his feet. Mostly, though, he was a little stuck for options, out wide on his own. Chiesa will get more chances, but they might be more often off the bench. That does seem to be how he can make the most impact.

Player ratings

Alisson Becker (7). Made a couple of good catches early on from looping crosses but then didn't really have a great deal to do, even when Wolves were on top. The Brazilian was largely a passenger and couldn't do anything with the goal he conceded, but needed some better distribution at times.

Jeremie Frimpong (8). Playing right-back initially, which is the position most thought would be his most frequent spot when he arrived, the Dutchman was rapid across the ground. He offered width and was handy for chasing back to make recovery tackles. The assist from the opener was a good one when he beat his man and pulled the ball back.

Ibrahima Konate (6). Outmuscled at times by Tolu Arokodare (like for the Bueno goal), who was a handful, but the Frenchman got the better of his man sufficiently in the end. Some of his passing was a bit off but he was generally fine.

Virgil van Dijk (7). Once or twice, his passes didn't quite come off, but that was rare. His man job was just to keep things ticking at the back and that's what he did.

Milos Kerkez (6). Got into a couple of good crossing positions with mixed success. Lashed a shot over the bar at one point, and needed a bit more composure in general. Battled hard and was better in the second half than the first.

Ryan Gravenberch (7). Composed finish to open the scoring when Liverpool was looking a little in mind of some inspiration. Had kept things simple before that point and the finish was no different, passed into the corner.

Curtis Jones (7). Some neat and tidy touches in congested areas but he wasn't as involved as he has been at times in recent games. Still decent, and liked to drift into the penalty area where he created a few spaces for others to run into. Needed to help the team keep the ball a bit more in the second half.

Federico Chiesa (6). A little isolated on the right wing. The Italian had a couple of moments but little more and couldn't last long into the second half after so long on the bench.

Alexis Mac Allister (6). Saw a shot forced onto the woodwork in the first half and was battling hard to win possession back. Swung in a couple of decent corners, too. Gave possession away too easily for one dangerous counter.

Florian Wirtz (8). Some of his touches and passes were simply effortless. The German was as silky as ever and seemed to have a bounce in his step. That will only have increased after he scored his first Premier League goal, taken well when he was teed up by Ekitike.

Hugo Ekitike (7). Hit the base of the post early in the game and then played a perfect pass for Wirtz's goal. Not always heavily involved in the game, but decisive when it came his way.

Substitutes

Conor Bradley (7). Back following his latest injury setback, Bradley was eased back into things and kept them simple. Didn't have loads of touches or much defending to do. Made one big interception near the end to deny Arokodare a shot from close range. Cody Gakpo also came on, replacing Ekitike, and Trey Nyoni was a late replacement for Wirtz, but too late in proceedings to earn a rating.
