NISSAN STADIUM, JAPAN // Liverpool came from behind to beat the Japanese side Yokohama Marinos as Florian Wirtz netted his first goal since arriving for a club record fee from Bayer Leverkusen this summer and Rio Ngumoha shone.
Asahi Uenaka opened the scoring in the second half, but Wirtz equalized not long after. And only a few minutes after coming on, young midfielder Trey Nyoni popped up at the back post to put Liverpool in front.
It was far from a classic game at the Nissan Stadium, but Liverpool will be pleased with the minutes that lots of key men got. The Reds will now fly back to the UK as they prepare for the double-header with Athletic Club on Monday.
Winners
Mohamed Salah played very well and Florian Wirtz just oozes class. It doesn't feel too early to predict that he is going to be a real star at Anfield; there is a reason that Liverpool was prepared to go so big to sign him.
Wirtz took a while to get used to the awful pitch but when he did, his touch was sublime. The German is a joy to watch: a Philippe Coutinho-like player, but with more intense pressing and running capabilities. Oh, and he's only 22.
Losers
No one was particularly poor here, though Liverpool does need to sharpen up a little more at the back. The biggest loser was the atrocious playing surface, which fortunately doesn't appear to have had any negative impacts injury-wise.
The ball bobbled around and never settled, which hardly made for a crisp passing game. It was far from a classic, but the grass more than played its part in that. Still, Wirtz looked good regardless, which can only be a positive sign.
Player ratings
Giorgi Mamardashvili (6). Alisson Becker was absent for personal reasons, but the Georgian had so little to do that you would be forgiven for not having noticed. He got down low to make one save that you would expect him to make, and he couldn't really do anything with the shot that beat him.
Conor Bradley (6). Ran into a few blind alleys and wasn't hugely involved going forward. The Liverpool build-up generally wasn't particularly fluid, and the opening goal came down his side.
Ibrahima Konate (5). Gave away a few unnecessary fouls. It wasn't his best game in possession, but that might be partly down to the state of the pitch. Nowhere near where he should have been for the opening goal.
Virgil van Dijk (7). Strong in the air and shepherded out a Yokohama Marinos counter-attack when Konate lost the ball on the halfway line. Solid.
Milos Kerkez (6). Not a great impact going forward, and lost the ball in a dangerous area early in the first half. Decent enough generally, but nothing more.
Ryan Gravenberch (6). Back in his favored midfield role, the Dutchman looked more at home in the middle of the field. The less said about his attempted long throws the better, though.
Dominik Szoboszlai (6). Breaking forward from deep as a late runner, that could be a real asset for Liverpool next season. He has some goal threat, and there are more than enough good passers to be able to find him.
Mohamed Salah (7). More involved than against AC Milan and developing relationships with those around him, the Egyptian's passing ability was really on show here. He's going to love playing alongside Wirtz.
Florian Wirtz (7). Playing as the No.10, the German playmaker was central to pretty much every attack. He started slowly but improved as he got used to a frankly terrible pitch, and netted his first goal in a Reds shirt.
Cody Gakpo (7). Hit the post early on and looked fairly lively. With Luis Diaz now a Bayern Munich player, he should have the left wing berth nailed down heading into the new campaign. That's not a worry, as he played well again.
Hugo Ekitike (6). Making his debut after transferring for a fee that could reach $106 million (£79 million) including add-ons, the Frenchman didn't really get his touch right often. He did press well, though, and was a very willing runner.
Substitutes
Darwin Nunez (45') (5). He put the ball wide from six or seven yards out when Salah teed him up with a brilliant pass and ran offside almost as soon as he came on. Nothing new there, then. Similarly, he was a willing runner.
Curtis Jones (45') (6). Like his teammates, he needed a bit of time to get used to the playing surface, but was tidy enough once that happened. He was instrumental in the move that led to Wirtz's goal, even if he might not have meant the flick into the former Bayer Leverkusen man's path. Should have won a couple of free kicks when the referee decided otherwise.
Wataru Endo (59') (6). Captaining the team on home soil, it was a lovely touch for him to get the armband. Playing center-back, you wonder whether that might be his best route to minutes in the upcoming campaign.
Kostas Tsimikas (59') (6). Sliding in at center-half, it is not his best position. Like Endo, though, needs must.
Rio Ngumoha (63') (7). The pitch wasn't ideal for someone whose game basically involved getting your head down and dribbling forward, but he somehow managed anyway. Electric when he came on, and took his goal superbly.
Trey Nyoni (63') (7). Scored a nice goal at the far post. Like Ngumoha, a real talent, and very tidy in possession.
Andy Robertson (63') (6). Solid at the back, but he didn't need to be much more than that.
Alexis Mac Allister (63') (6). Back from injury, in what is a huge boost for Liverpool, the Argentine will take time to get back up to full speed. That was all this half an hour was about, and he looked decent enough.
Jeremie Frimpong (63') (7). He set up the Nyoni goal really nice cross into a dangerous area. Lively again, as he was against AC Milan.
Harvey Elliott (63') (6). Struggled to get into the game, but didn't do much wrong. Booked.
