Liverpool’s summer transfer business has reshaped Arne Slot’s squad, with major calls made over marquee arrivals Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike.
The Reds now look well-balanced heading into the new campaign, but questions remain over how the strongest XI will line up following the close of the window. Following the departures of Luis Diaz, Harvey Elliott and Darwin Nunez, the British-record signing of Isak from Newcastle instantly elevates Liverpool’s attack, providing a focal point with a blend of pace, power, and technical quality.
Ekitike also offers depth and versatility across the front line but it remains to been seen whether or not he will get the chance to continue his impressive start to life on Merseyside.
The goalkeeping position is one of the easiest to decide. Alisson has been widely regarded as the Premier League’s standout goalkeeper for at least the past five years, and the Brazilian remains firmly established as Liverpool’s No.1 for now.
At right-back Jeremie Frimpong was ultimately signed as a replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold but has only made one appearance in the Premier League. Dominik Szoboszlai has been deployed at right-back in recent games and impressed with his performances, though it remains a role outside his natural position, while Conor Bradley also stakes a claim to start.
At center-back despite some poor performances, Ibrahima Konate will more than likely continue to partner captain Virgil van Dijk. While on the left side, Milos Kerkez, who was impressive at Bournemouth, will most likely continue to oust Andy Robertson.
The midfield is where it gets tricky. The Reds have a number of talented options who can perform in the center of the pitch. Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch are set to retain their places in midfield after forming the pivot that helped guide Liverpool to the title last season. The pair complement each other well, controlling possession and keeping the game flowing.
Szoboszlai has also been outstanding, excelling in an advanced role with his relentless work rate, creativity, and ability to threaten from distance.
However, despite his fine form, the arrival of Bundesliga star Florian Wirtz changes the picture. The highly rated German playmaker’s reputation and pedigree could give him the edge.
Up front, the Reds are again blessed with a variety of different options. Mohamed Salah’s new contract ensures he keeps his place on the right wing, fresh from winning the Premier League Player of the Season award last term. The real debate lies in the two other attacking roles.
Ekitike has hit the ground running with two goals in his opening two matches, but it’s impossible to overlook Isak. The Swedish striker arrives with an outstanding record of 54 goals in just 86 Premier League appearances for Newcastle United.
Ekitke can play on the left flank but Cody Gakpo has been impressing in that role but has had a slow start to the season. There is also teenage sensation Rio Ngumoha who has impressed fans during pre-season and with his last minute winner against Newcastle. However at 17-years-old it remains unlikely he will be a regular feature in the league.
Liverpool's strongest XI: Alisson, Frimpong, Konate, Van Dijk, Kerkez, Mac Allister, Gravenberch, Wirtz, Salah, Isak and Ekitike.
