It's claimed Liverpool is keen on signing Marc Guehi in the January transfer window after a failed attempt to secure the Crystal Palace defender's signature on transfer deadline day.
The deal fell through at the last minute, as the Eagles were unable to secure a senior replacement for the England international. Guehi has been a standout performer in London since his move from Chelsea in 2021.
During his stint at Selhurst Park, he earned his first England cap and has since accumulated 23 appearances for his country. The 25-year-old represented the Three Lions at Euro 2024 and played a pivotal role in Palace's FA Cup win over Manchester City last season, the club's first major trophy.
It seemed that Guehi was on the brink of a move to Liverpool after the Reds agreed to pay Palace £35 million ($47 million) for his services.
A deal sheet had been submitted to extend Liverpool's window to finalize the signing beyond the deadline.
Moreover, the player had already undergone a medical and agreed to personal terms with Arne Slot's side.
However, Palace's inability to sign an experienced center-back, settling instead for teenage defender Jaydee Cavot from Toulouse, led them to ultimately withdraw from the deal.
According to The Athletic, Guehi's move to Liverpool has been postponed rather than cancelled.
The player can either make the switch to Anfield in January or next summer, with his contract set to expire at the end of next June.
Throughout the summer transfer window, Palace manager Oliver Glasner was vocal about his wish to retain Guehi at Selhurst Park. The Eagles are already dealing with the loss of Eberechi Eze, who transferred to Arsenal last month after a five-year stint in south London.
Following Palace's 3-0 triumph over Aston Villa on Sunday evening, Glasner stated: "We have to (keep Guehi) if we want to play a successful season. If we don't have the right replacement, for me it's clear to keep him."
Liverpool will be fervently hoping that its unsuccessful summer chase for Guehi doesn't hinder its Premier League title defence.
The Reds have had an impressive start to the season, winning their first three matches and securing maximum points.
Slot's team clinched a late 4-2 victory against Bournemouth in the season's opener, followed by a 3-2 win over a 10-man Newcastle at St. James' Park 10 days later. On Sunday, the reigning champions defeated Arsenal 1-0, with Dominik Szoboszlai netting the decisive goal with a superb free-kick.
