Liverpool's stance on firing Arne Slot after Jurgen Klopp spoke about return

8 hours ago 4

Despite a disappointing exit from the Carabao Cup at home to Crystal Palace, Liverpool manager Arne Slot's position remains secure at Anfield.

The Reds suffered a 3-0 defeat to the Eagles on Wednesday, marking their sixth loss in seven matches and their second against Palace during this period. After leading Liverpool to Premier League glory in his debut season at Anfield, Slot and his team have experienced a sudden dip in form.

The Reds began the season flawlessly, winning their first seven matches across all competitions. However, they have since lost six out of seven games, leaving them seventh in the league and out of the Carabao Cup.

This downturn has led to increased speculation about Slot's future at the club. However, the reality is that Slot is not currently under any pressure and continues to receive strong backing from the club's hierarchy.

His achievement of securing the league title in his first season after succeeding Jurgen Klopp has earned him significant goodwill, and Liverpool has no plans to make a managerial change during this challenging period.

Speculation has arisen about whether Liverpool would consider reappointing Klopp in a time of crisis. The iconic manager, who left Anfield in 2024 due to burnout, has hinted that a reunion could be possible under the right circumstances.

Speaking on The Diary of a CEO podcast earlier in October, the German said: "I said I will never coach a different team in England so that means, if [I did return], then it's Liverpool. So, yeah, theoretically it is possible."

To his credit, Slot has recognized the growing pressure surrounding his role following Wednesday's defeat. That said, he didn't believe his second loss to the Eagles within seven matches had fundamentally altered the situation.

"If you are on a run of results like this, if you play for Liverpool, if you manage Liverpool, the pressure is there," he said at Anfield after the midweek defeat. "I don't think it has changed much after this loss.

"There are multiple reasons we have lost so many games, but with all the reasons still are no excuses to lose so many. But it hasn't been helpful that all the games we lost there were only two days in between the games we had to play away from home."

Liverpool was viewed as the underdog for Wednesday's game after fielding a predominantly second-choice XI with only academy prospects on the substitutes' bench.

Nevertheless, Slot defended his team selection when asked whether he had shown sufficient regard for the fixture.

He continued: "It is always a blow to lose a game of football. Especially if it leads to going out of a competition. But it is the same selection I did last season in rounds like this. There are many reasons we lost five out of six, or six out of seven.

"None of them are good enough to accept losing so many."
