Liverpool could still be about to pull the biggest coup yet in what has already been a sensational transfer window.
The Reds have already broken their transfer record for the signing of Florian Wirtz this summer, and have added Hugo Ekitike this week in a deal that could reach $107 million. With Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez also on board, and Giorgi Mamardashvili completing his move from Valencia, Arne Slot’s squad has a whole new look for next season’s title defense.
And there is still the possibility they have something even bigger up their sleeves, especially with Alexander Isak telling Newcastle he wants to leave.
According to the Daily Mail, and now backed up by various other outlets, the striker has informed his current club he wants to explore other options this summer, having been the subject of an approach by Liverpool already.
Newcastle has remained firm in its stance that Isak is not for sale, although the 25-year-old has now put the Magpies into a distinctly weaker position.
The development might not come as a surprise to many, given it has looked on the cards for the past few days now.
Isak was sent home by Eddie Howe before Newcastle’s friendly against Celtic at the weekend, with the Magpies boss citing the recent speculation around his future as his reason.
The club though took a different line when it announced Isak had been left out of its touring party to Asia, with a thigh injury given as the reason for his absence.
It now appears there is much more behind the decision, and Newcastle could now face having to make a U-turn on its stance, which will almost certainly have Liverpool interested.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Isak remains a target for the Reds even after the signing of Ekitike, although any move would obviously depend on Newcastle opening the door to a move.

It’s also suggested that a transfer might rely on Liverpool selling Luis Diaz, with Bayern Munich expected to make a second bid for the winger soon.
Despite recent rumors suggesting there is interest from Saudi Arabia, Isak is said to not be in concrete talks with Al-Hilal, with Liverpool still seemingly the favorite to land his signature.
Liverpool.com says: What a development this is. It always felt like a distinct possibility that Isak might force something through, but for it to happen so soon after Liverpool made an approach does make it seem as though he would be keen on a move to Anfield.
It might still be a long shot, given how much Newcastle wants for his signature and the fact the Magpies probably won't want to sell to another Premier League side, but just imagine Isak in that Liverpool team next season.
