Liverpool stance on signing Chelsea star in January after disastrous blow for Enzo Maresca

1 day ago 38

Chelsea defender Levi Colwill is still 'appreciated' by Liverpool but the Reds don't believe he is available and have never made an offer as a result, it has been claimed.

Arne Slot's side are considering whether to make a move for another centre-back in the January transfer window, after Giovanni Leoni suffered an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury last month. The 18-year-old has undergone surgery and is expected to miss the rest of the season.

With Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez considered as Liverpool's only three fit central defenders, there has been talk that the Reds could dip into the market to sign someone in January.

Indeed, according to talkSPORT internal discussions are currently taking place as to whether another centre-back is needed.

It's added that Chelsea's Colwill is a long-term target and remains appreciated, but the Reds don't think that a deal is feasible and have since decided not to make an offer.

The England international, however, hasn't been available since August due to an ACL tear and is not expected to be back until at least March.

Elsewhere, ex-Chelsea defender Marc Guehi, who was close to joining Liverpool in a £35million deal in the summer, is open to seeing out the rest of the season at Crystal Palace, playing at the World Cup with England and then picking his next club as a free transfer. Guehi's contract is up in June 2026.

Liverpool are also working on extending Ibrahima Konate's contract, with the Frenchman boasting less than nine months on his remaining deal.

The Reds made their last formal offer before the summer window slammed shut, but Real Madrid remain keen and are available to negotiate a pre-contract agreement from January.

As well as Colwill and Guehi, Sven Botman, Willian Pacho, Zeno Debast and Ousmane Diomande are among the others that Liverpool are tracking and hit high in the club's data driven approach.

The Blues are looking to make it two wins in four days after Tuesday's 1-0 victory against Benfica in the Champions League.
