Liverpool star trains ahead of Atletico Madrid but cannot play in Champions League opener

2 hours ago 2

Federico Chiesa trained with his Liverpool teammates on Tuesday but will sit out the Reds' Champions League meeting with Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.

The Italian was a somewhat surprise exclusion from Liverpool's squad for the competition when Arne Slot finalized his group for Europe earlier this month.

But that, of course, does not mean that he cannot train with his teammates on the week of European games, and he was involved in the session on the eve of the game at Anfield.

Uefa permits clubs in the Champions League to submit an 'A List' of up to 25 players, with eight of the slots in the squad reserved for players who meet the criteria to be classed as a locally trained player.

Liverpool only actually has five senior players that meet that criteria — Freddie Woodman, Joe Gomez, Curtis Jones, Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley — so the Reds' A List only actually contains 22 players. Chiesa was not among the 17 non-locally trained players named in the squad.

Due to a flawed Uefa rule, Rio Ngumoha is not classed as a locally-grown player because of his age and the fact he was developed by Chelsea up until last year; Slot favored including him on the A List over Chiesa.
