Liverpool’s players provided the perfect response to Steven Gerrard’s warning ahead of the Fulham game — and Arne Slot will be feeling relieved that they did.

The Reds returned to winning ways with a 2-0 win over Marco Silva’s side at Anfield on Saturday, with Rio Ngumoha and Mohamed Salah providing the goals to boost their side’s push for Champions League qualification.

Liverpool went four points clear of Chelsea ahead of the Blues’ clash with Manchester City on Sunday, ensuring that it will hold onto fifth after this weekend’s round of games — a position that would be enough for a place at Europe’s top table.

And with the Reds’ chances of qualifying by winning a seventh European crown looking slim ahead of the quarterfinal second leg against Paris Saint-Germain, the victory over Fulham could prove to be crucial for their Champions League hopes — and Slot’s job security.

Before seeing his former side’s poor run continue with a defeat in Paris, Gerrard left Liverpool in no uncertain terms about the clash with Fulham.

"I think it's key [to qualify for the Champions League]," Gerrard told talkSPORT. "I think the Fulham game is just as important [as the PSG games].

"If the ownership and the people above see that gap to [Aston] Villa and [Manchester] United stretches or gets any worse, I worry for the manager's position. I don't want that to happen — I'm a huge fan of Arne Slot.

"I was blown away by his first season, I must say. He's a good man. He's obviously a very, very good coach, the job he's done.

"But I think the key to this situation will be the Fulham game, in terms of, if he can put more heat on United and Villa, and he can stay in the PSG game into next week, I think everything will be fine and in a better place in five, six days' time.

"But if this was to get any worse, I would be worried for the manager, I must say."

Liverpool will have at least seven games remaining this season, starting with Tuesday’s return leg against PSG, when it will need to try and overturn a 2-0 deficit.

If it fails to do so, all attention will turn to the Premier League as the last hope for Champions League qualification.

The Reds face Everton (April 19) and Crystal Palace (April 25) before a huge end to the season in May, with games against United (May 3), Chelsea (May 9), and Villa (May 17) to come before Brentford visits Anfield on the final day (May 24).
