Liverpool suffers injury setback as striker faces months out of team

Liverpool's young striker, Jayden Danns, is set to miss the remainder of the calendar year following a significant injury setback.

The 19-year-old suffered a hamstring injury while taking a free-kick during Liverpool's U21 Premier League 2 game against Ipswich Town last month. Further scans have unveiled the seriousness of the issue, with Danns now facing an extended period out of action as he recovers.

"It could be a couple of months," Liverpool U21 coach Rob Page told the Liverpool Echo. "It's not going to be a quick fix. It's a setback for him, but Dannsy is very positive about everything in life, especially football.

"If anybody can get through this setback, it's him without doubt. He has the full support of the medical team and myself, and the staff.

"He'll get through it."

This comes as another devastating blow for the young forward, who had a potential loan move to Sunderland fall through due to a back injury in the second half of last season.

Danns had returned to full fitness over the summer and made a substitute appearance in the first team's League Cup victory over Southampton just four days prior to his latest injury.

The striker made his senior debut for Liverpool in February 2024 and has since scored three goals in 10 appearances, featuring in every major tournament, including last year's League Cup final victory over Chelsea at Wembley.

"I think the hunger has always been in my belly, even from when I was younger, if a player was starting over me, I wouldn't like it," Danns confessed last year as he aims to push forward after making his first-team debut at Liverpool.

"So, to be honest, my big goal is to just progress as far as I can go and keep trying to get better as a player, to keep progressing and trying to score goals and do the best for the team.

"So, the hunger's not gone, it's only just started.

"That first taste is just unbelievable so you just want to keep getting it again and I'm grateful for everything that is coming.

"This is my boyhood club and I'm just grateful to be in this situation. Like I said, the more chances I get the more chances I want to take.

"But if I don't get them chances I just want to keep working hard and there's top-class players ahead of you [so] there's no fuss about whether you're in or you're not, you're just grateful when you're in and around it, so the chances that I get, I'll work as hard as I can and try to take them."
