Liverpool simply needs to keep the tie alive. Having something to fight for back at Anfield would be a solid result for Arne Slot, not least in the context of a difficult season.

Last time out, the Reds were hammered by Manchester City, with Virgil van Dijk admitting that he and his teammates gave up after conceding a couple of goals. This time, they are going to need to show much more in the way of battling spirit to avoid another heavy defeat at the hands of the European champions.

Ahead of the game, Slot has some major calls to make when it comes to his team selection. For instance, the fitness of Joe Gomez and Jeremie Frimpong needs to be managed.

That call at right-back — and Slot hinted that Gomez would be asked to go again after he was substituted against Manchester City in the second half — is a big one, but it is not the only one.

In midfield, it can be argued that Curtis Jones was one of the few Liverpool men to emerge with anything close to credit at the Etihad Stadium. There is a case, therefore, that he should keep his place.

Alexis Mac Allister is likely to come back in, though, and there are Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai to fit into the starting XI as well on a day when energy and legs in the center will be vital.

There is a case for bringing in the experience of Andy Robertson ahead of Milos Kerkez, while at the other end of the pitch, Mohamed Salah really struggled in his first match after announcing his summer departure.

In an ideal world, Salah would come out of the team, and someone else would come in. The problem, really, is that there are no genuine alternatives.

Federico Chiesa and Cody Gakpo have made a limited impact this term, while throwing Rio Ngumoha into a Champions League clash away from home in Paris is simply not an option.

A similar set-up to what we saw against Manchester City is more likely, with Florian Wirtz on the left and Salah close to Hugo Ekitike.

And though it didn't work for most of the game at the Etihad Stadium, Slot might not have any choice. He will just need to hope that it works out more like it did against Galatasaray than in the weekend's FA Cup defeat.

All across the field, there is an argument that Liverpool needs to freshen things up. With limited options available, however, it is just not that simple.

Slot and his players are in desperate need of a positive result against PSG. In reality, though, even if Luis Enrique has claimed otherwise, the odds look stacked against them.
