Liverpool third jersey already on sale with retailer despite no official release

Liverpool’s third kit is available to purchase at a major UK retail outlet, despite the club not officially releasing it yet.

The Reds had a big splash with the unveiling of its new Adidas jerseys on Friday, with the home, away and goalkeeping shirts for the 2025/26 season released at the start of the club’s decade-long partnership with the German sports brand.

Alongside the new kit launch, Liverpool opened its expanded Anfield club retail store on Friday to coincide with the announcement, produced a nostalgic video that included several club legends, and also released a new batch of other Adidas merchandise.

While the home and away kits were made public, the identity of the third kit was supposed to be shrouded in mystery. In truth, that was never likely, given all kits tend to be leaked online, and the green third jersey has been easily visible for weeks with a quick Google search.

But in a shock twist, it can be purchased online via Next for £60 - around $80 - even though it is not currently for sale on Liverpool or Adidas’ websites.

The home shirts and training gear are also available via Next. The away kit is not listed on the site, though.

That could point to an administrative error, with the wrong kit made available for purchase.

Regardless, Liverpool and Adidas are bound to be furious about the hiccup. Premier League clubs remain guarded over a new kit launch - staff often have to sign Non-Disclosure Agreements ahead of the release.

Meanwhile, Liverpool’s return to Adidas has been well received by fans. The sports brand manufactured the Reds’ kits between 1985-1996 and 2006-2012, hence the inclusion of Sir Kenny Dalglish, Ian Rush, John Barnes and Jamie Carragher in Friday’s media release.

Liverpool will first wear the home kit on Monday in the double friendly against La Liga side Athletic Bilbao at Anfield. The away jersey will be debuted at Wembley next weekend in the Community Shield.

As for the third kit, well, that remains a mystery. Perhaps the first away Premier League match of the season - at Newcastle United on August 25 - has been circled in the diaries by the marketing and commercial teams at Liverpool.

But Next's apparent slip-up has certainly soured any big kit launch. The high-street giant is also selling kits for Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City, and Arsenal ahead of the new season.
