Liverpool’s January transfer deadline day looked set to be a quiet affair until unexpected news broke on Sunday about the Reds’ movement on two defenders.

The first, ultimately, looks to be in vain. Any late deal for Arne Slot favorite Lutsharel Geertruida would come as a shock. The versatile defender is on loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig and it seems the Black Cats’ inability to secure a replacement will prevent this particular move.

But given his ability to play right-back and in the middle, Geertruida’s addition would have been a welcome sight.

The Reds are in desperate need of defensive reinforcements, however, it appears that next summer will be the time to recruit in that area.

Late on Sunday, news emerged that the Reds had agreed a fee to sign Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet.

The Reds will pay a fee of £55 million ($75M), plus an additional £5M ($7M) in add-ons, with the 20-year-old due to make the move ahead of next season. While that won’t help with Liverpool’s immediate problems, it is an exciting signing, and one that will dominate Liverpool’s deadline day.
