Liverpool didn't look to be busy in the transfer market, then it did. Then a move for Lutsharel Geertruida seems to have hit a stumbling block with time running out.

Arne Slot is still short of bodies and Liverpool could do with getting someone in, but it has left it late. At center-back and right-back, it looks light at the moment, though Joe Gomez should be back from the injury that he sustained against Bournemouth sooner rather than later.

Here is the Liverpool.com verdict on the transfer gossip to emerge around the Reds on Monday. The winter window closes at 7pm UK time (2pm ET), so the clock is ticking.

Lutsharel Geertruida(Sunderland, on loan from RB Leipzig)

Liverpool was keen on a deal for Geertruida, but it appears that the moving parts have not fallen into place. It was always going to be a complex one to get done.

Geertruida is on loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig, so all parties would have to be involved and on the same page. Regis Le Bris' side is not keen on letting a key member of its squad leave midway through the season, The Times reports.

Given he can play right-back, center-back and in midfield, Geertruida made sense as an option for Liverpool. He also knows Arne Slot, having worked with him at Feyenoord.

However, there was no guarantee it would go anywhere. Geertruida was one of a number of options being considered, with a few hours remaining for some last-minute movement.

Galatasaray's Roland Sallai has been suggested as an alternative to Geertruida by Sacha Tavolieri. It's claimed that the Hungarian could come into the Reds' thinking.

Liverpool.com says: Geertruida would have been a good option, but it was a tricky one. Sunderland has played him 17 times this season, so losing him without a replacement was always unlikely.

Though Sunderland is not going to get relegated this season, it would be unrealistic to expect it to go out of its way to help Liverpool. Let's see what happens next.

Jeremy Jacquet (Rennes)

Liverpool has secured a deal to sign Jeremy Jacquet in the summer, as reported by Liverpool.com on Sunday.

The Reds have agreed to pay an initial $75 million (£55 million) for the player, with a further $7 million (£5 million) potentially coming in add-ons.

Rennes has always been insistent that he wouldn't be leaving this month, even with Chelsea keen. Bayern Munich was also credited with holding an interest.

Jacquet is a very highly rated center-back and he has plenty of senior experience despite only being 20.

In recent windows, Liverpool has looked at the likes of Dean Huijsen and Leny Yoro, but missed out. It did sign Giovanni Leoni from Parma, who is a very big talent for the future.

Jacquet would be in a similar mold, with no news yet on whether Ibrahima Konate will be extending his contract and Virgil van Dijk not getting any younger.

Liverpool.com says: Jacquet looks to be a real talent. Chelsea has been very keen on him, but being patient has played to Liverpool's advantage.
